Hand Pump Well in Ethiopia

The best form of charity is giving water to drink. – Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

Safe and adequate access to water is a global issue, with far-reaching consequences for health, economic growth, and overall quality of life. In many developing countries, communities often have to travel long distances to obtain water from sources like rivers and lakes that may not be safe to drink.

Clean water is a basic human right and everyone should have access to it. Lack of access to clean water goes against the principles of equity and justice as it violates basic human rights, creates inequalities, unfairly burdens marginalized communities, and limits opportunities for growth and development.

To combat water scarcity, Humanity Helps Hunger builds wells in remote areas with limited access to surface water or without centralized water systems. These wells provide a source of water for drinking, agriculture and livestock, which are crucial for the survival and well-being of the communities. Improving access to water is a key factor in promoting good health and hygiene, reduction of poverty, supporting economic development, enhancing quality of life and achieving sustainable development.

In the Oromia region of Ethiopia, lack of access to clean water is a major challenge for many communities. To address this issue, we implemented a water project in the area to construct a hand-dug well in Sululta Town.

Before the well was built, the community had to travel long distances to collect water from unprotected and unsafe sources. Now, with the hand pump well in place, the community has access to a reliable source of clean water that is easily accessible. The project has had a significant impact on the community, improving their health and hygiene, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases, and freeing up time for other productive activities.

The success of this well project is a testament to the power of community-led development and the importance of providing sustainable and long-term solutions to address global issues such as access to clean water. We, Humanity Helps Hunger, are proud to have been a part of this project and look forward to continuing to make a positive impact in communities around the world.
